OLD BOAT RESTORATION
We are restoring an old wooden boat and want to use a high-quality preservative. Does Marine Boss meet these qualifications?
Marine Boss is designed specifically to counteract all the methods by which your wood boat has deteriorated. The secret is to carefully follow our instructions for proper preparation and application procedures along with adequate quantity of product.
BOAT: TEAK FLOORING, CANVAS
I have a 35 foot sailing boat with a variety of surfaces to protect, including teak flooring, metal side rails, canvas, and fiberglass. Can we use Marine Boss on any of these surfaces?
Most definitely. When applying Marine Boss you can apply the same formulas to all of your surfaces, from teak to canvas to fiberglass. However, on bright white fiberglass Marine Boss may cause a yellow tint. On sailcloth you may want to use the Marine Boss clear formula. Be sure all surfaces are clean and dry prior to application of Marine Boss.
BOAT: TEAK FLOORING
We have a custom-made boat with teak hardwood flooring. We have had to sand and re-varnish after every season. How can we prevent this?
Marine Boss to the rescue! All existing product on the surface must be completely removed by sanding or other agreeable methods. If this is not possible, clean the surface thoroughly to remove all loose varnish, dirt and pollution prior to applying Marine Boss. Apply Marine Boss in multiple light applications. It may be necessary to wipe down the surface with a wet towel after each application to ensure adequate penetration. As long as there is no standing product on the surface, it is not necessary to have the surface dry between application, but it is actually desirable to put on coat after coat. After several applications, when product will no longer penetrate and the surface is dry, apply multiple coats to the surface, which will help build up a surface film from within. As each succeeding coat monolithically bonds with the previous coat, continue applying until you reach the level of sheen you desire. If a rough surface in specific traffic areas is desired, simply add very fine ground sand to the last coat.
FIBERGLASS BOAT: OXIDATION
The surface color of our fiberglass boat is very oxidized and is starting to powder off. Also, the surface areas exposed to the sun are becoming very rough and are beginning to crack. What can Weather Boss do for us?
We have the complete solution for you. The ingredients in Marine Boss, when properly applied, will rejuvenate the surface color plus provide dimensional stability which your boat had when it was new. Make sure you thoroughly wash the entire boat with soap and water, using a powerwasher to clean difficult areas. Apply several coats of Marine Boss to the surface in direct sunlight, above 72º F (22º C.) Be sure the surface is completely dry before each application. Applying product with a pad in a circular motion, similar to waxing your car, will restore much of the original color as well as creating a smooth surface. Due to the changing porosity of the fiberglass, the amount of absorption or penetration may vary. Consequently it is important to apply as many coats as required to give you "the look" you want.
BOAT: METAL RAILINGS
Can I use Marine Boss on the metal railing on our boat and docks?
Yes, Marine Boss can be used on most metal to protect the finish, including galvanized metal. You can also use Marine Boss on all surrounding surfaces such as wood, canvas and fiberglass etc. Marine Boss provides protection for a variety of surfaces. Apply multiple light coats of Marine Boss on a clean warm surface in direct sunlight, ensuring that the product dries completely between coats.
BOAT: METAL RUSTING
Our yacht has metal rails surrounding the upper deck, and we have a problem with the metal rusting and then discoloring the finish on the surrounding areas. What would you recommend?
Your yacht is in safe hands with Marine Boss. When applying Marine Boss to metal in a humid environment, you must first remove as much of the existing rust as possible, and then apply multiple coats with a towel or rag in the heat of the day in direct sunlight for best results. Make sure that each coat is thoroughly dried before applying another coat. If these conditions do not exist, you will need to place the boat in a dry dock environment and apply under controlled conditions, ensuring that the temperature of the metal is above 72º F (22º C), and without the problem of water contact.
BOAT: DOUBLE PLANKED
I have a particular "problem" in that I own a 30 foot wooden boat. Unlike most traditional plank-on-frame boats, which use a single layer of "caravel" planking, this boat is double-planked. With caravel planked boats, the construction is designed to "breathe." This is accomplished by using fairly wide seams and filling them with fiber, such as cotton or oakum, so that the boat takes up water until the planking and oakum swell and the boat becomes water tight. By contrast, a double-planked boat is designed to be "dry": a mastic impregnated membrane separates the two layers of planking and the joints are tightly fitted.
My problem comes when I do the annual haul-out. It is a race against time to complete the job before the planks shrink and dry excessively. My greatest fear is having the outer planks become "cupped", which could destroy the integrity of the mastic seal. I need something to keep the planking dimensionally stable. The old system of linseed oil and red-lead primer can't be used anymore (red lead is banned). So what I need is a filler/preservative that is compatible with modern, modified epoxy paints. The boat is in the water year-round and operates on both fresh and salt water. Needless to say, I need a preservative that is non-leaching and will allow water vapor to transpire from the hull during haul-out, but which might otherwise add dimensional stability to the wood. Am I looking for the impossible?
Your project is interesting, and no, you are not looking for the impossible. Our Marine Boss was designed for this type of situation. It dimensionally stabilizes the planks, while allowing the wood to breathe. Proper application procedures are crucial in this case. You do not have a unique situation, but rather a very common condition to all wood boats which are continually exposed to water and harsh climatic conditions. First realize you have a large investment which requires adequate time, care and money to protect. If you will commit the necessary time and money to follow our specific instructions of proper preparation and application, along with adequate quantity of product, you will eliminate all of the continual problems you have been experiencing. In short, Marine Boss will solve every problem you have described.
CANVAS SAILCLOTHS
What can we do to protect the canvas sailcloths on our 42 foot sailing boat?
Depending on the integrity of the cloth (old and weather worn) you simply spread your sailcloth out so that you can apply Marine Boss with a sprayer. Remember, any blemish or dirt which remains on the sailcloth prior to application of Marine Boss will become a permanent fixture of your fabric. It is important to be careful with surrounding areas because any over-spray will adhere to anything it comes in contact with--including furniture, clothes, windows, etc. Apply your choice of formulas in the heat of the day in direct sunlight. After applying 2-3 light coats the sailcloth will become stiffer to the touch, so be careful to apply the quantity of Marine Boss which will provide you with the finished appearance and handling capacity you desire.
